If you are crafty and love to knit and crochet, or would like to give it a try, you will love today’s post, talking about an eco friendly yarn, made from recycled materials, RibbonXL. I remember spending hours working on knitting wonky leg warmers in the 1980’s but the nature of knitting never really hooked me, so to speak! My now 100 year old Grandma used to be the Queen of knitting, so maybe there is a knitting gene somewhere in me and I adore the finished product of something hand knitted or crocheted. This is a growing trend in interiors with the textural layers of hand knitted items adding class to any home. So I am planning to revisit my knitting history with this fabulous yarn.
Gwen Van Overbeke moved to Australia from the Netherlands in 2010. She has a soft spot for colourful art and crafts and decided to take her passion to the next level when she came here, starting her business, Hoooked.
Gwen sells and distributes recycled yarn called RibbonXL to her customers across Australia, who turn the yarn into creative, colourful objects such as rugs, cushions and accessories.
RibbonXL is an eco-friendly yarn made of 100% recycled fibres (80% cotton and 20% other recycled fibres), which is fabulous. The cotton fibres are derived from leftovers from the fashion industry and are woven into a thick and consistent yarn. The cotton yarn is machine washable on cold temperatures. It is a great yarn for making homewares like rugs and cushions as due to the thickness of the yarn, the items end up with that nice ‘chunky’ look which is so popular right now and adds layers of texture to a room. Also clothing, accessories and handbags can easily be made with RibbonXL thanks to its light weight and itch-free nature.
Gwen says their customers vary significantly. “Most of them are not even avid crocheters or knitters, but ordinary people who want to make something special that matches their taste and interior.” Gwen designed some simple patterns for you if you are this kind of person, which I am, and says only a basic knowledge of crocheting and knitting is required to whip something up in no time. I am going to give it a go!
Other customers who are more experienced with crafts and arts, often combine RibbonXL with other materials. “We also supply to yarn shops all over the country who stock RibbonXL and give workshops with the yarn” says Gwen. They receive a lot of pictures from their customers featuring their self-made items and she says that is the most rewarding part of her job.
