Daniel Giffin is a Melbourne lighting designer who recently shared his work with me, in particular his recycled timber lamps from old hardwood offcuts, produced when making Blueprint tables. All of the timber comes from demolished buildings around Australia and they are all handmade locally by Daniel.

Daniel’s philosophy in life is a quote by Christopher Morley – “there is only one success – to be able to spend your life in your own way”.

What a beautiful approach to life don’t you think? He says he lives by this quote, and is at his happiest when he is creating something he can be proud of. “I love seeing the results of much determination, passion and skill in the product that grew from a single thought, to become reality” he says.

Daniel grew up around his father’s mechanical workshop and was always fixing things or making his own projects from a very young age. After a bachelor in Industrial Design and various positions as an industrial designer, he found himself making his own lamp designs, using the laser cutter and routers at work.

He went on to learn a lot more about lighting at Mance Design where he worked for a few years on the custom designed jobs, followed by living in Denmark for a year, where he worked at Lego headquarters as a concept designer!! Oh my god…my 6 year old son would kill to work at Lego headquarters, that is just rock star cool in our house!

This was followed by a stint with Riis Retail designing furniture and lighting for fashion shops around Europe. This background shows in his designs, with a myriad of skills developed across this diverse range of experiences. The simple clean lines of his designs allow the materials, shapes and craftsmanship, to shine.

After another year of traveling he returned home to Melbourne and completed a small business management course in order to fulfill his dream of running his own business – creating and then making, his own designs. Through Giffin Design he offers a unique opportunity for people to source lighting options that are all based around your personal needs and desires. The very mid century feel of the pieces is right on trend, with a contemporary edge and use of recycled and natural materials. A beautiful combination for modern, quality lighting.
